INTERACTIVE WORKSHOP

Innovation Hackathon

Saturday, September 21 2024 | 18:00 – 20:00 | FUTURE LEARNING LAB

The Region of Thessaly, JOIST Innovation Park, and Health Hub are organizing an open Innovation Marathon (Hackathon) as part of the InnoHealth Forum 2024. The event will take place at JOIST Innovation Park in Larissa, on Saturday, September 21, 2024.

The aim of the Hackathon is to promote, network, and reward ideas, proposals, and applications that contribute to innovative solutions for development issues in Thessaly. This will be achieved by leveraging the creative human capital of universities, research centers, and businesses.

Teams interested in participating (project teams) can submit proposals related to one of the following challenges/themes:

1. Accessibility in Remote Areas

Accessibility in remote areas is a significant issue affecting the quality of life for residents. These areas often suffer from geographical isolation, limited infrastructure, and transportation difficulties, which can adversely affect the provision of healthcare services and overall health of the population. Key health challenges include delayed diagnosis and treatment, lack of preventive check-ups, poor hygiene and nutrition, and psychological stress.

Example ideas for this theme include, but are not limited to:

  • Applications in the field of telemedicine and personalized diagnosis and treatment.
2. Atmospheric Pollution Measurement

Measuring atmospheric pollutants is critical for understanding the impact of air pollution on health. Air quality directly affects human health, especially in high-pollution areas. Therefore, continuous monitoring and measurement of atmospheric pollutants are crucial for public health protection. This data helps in developing policies and measures to reduce air pollution, informing the public, and taking protective measures, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory and cardiovascular conditions.

Example ideas for this theme include, but are not limited to:

  • Development of diffusion models (computational models) to simulate the dispersion of atmospheric pollutants using meteorological and emission data.

  • Collection of local air quality data in urban and rural areas.

3. Culture and Health Education

The integration of culture and health education is essential for shaping healthy behaviors, promoting health, and enhancing the well-being of individuals and communities. Understanding cultural parameters can enhance the effectiveness of health education and tailor interventions to the needs of different population groups.

Example ideas for this theme include, but are not limited to:

  • Participatory approaches based on the role of communities in health education.

  • Development of educational materials reflecting cultural diversity.

  • Interventions promoting the use of new technologies, incorporating traditional practices, and promoting mental well-being.

Additional ideas applicable to all themes:

  • Solutions using big data, the Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, information systems, and other new information and communication technologies.

  • Solutions related to technologies that help the transition of the health sector, public entities, and all stakeholders in addressing significant health issues brought by the digital age and climate change.

Working groups are invited to structure their proposals based on the challenge, focusing on one of the following fields:

  • Technology

  • Health

  • Transportation and Communication Infrastructure

  • Education

  • Culture

  • Environment

Note: Combination of fields is also allowed.

| Submission Deadline: Wednesday, September 18, 2024, by 12:00 p.m..

Proposals must be submitted in PowerPoint format (pptx), with a maximum of 12 slides. Additionally, proposals can be accompanied by clarifications or notes in a Word document, up to 500 words.

Proposals must include the following sections:

  • Identification of need / definition of action framework based on the need (3 slides)

  • Existing solutions (1 slide)

  • Proposal for the challenge (2-3 slides)

  • Budget (1 slide)

  • Working team (1 slide)

  • Expected results – Risk analysis (1-2 slides)

Teams participating in the Innovation Marathon can consist of 2 to 5 members. Only individuals aged 18 and above can participate. The maximum number of teams is eight. If applications exceed this number, proposals will be evaluated by the responsible evaluation committee based on the evaluation criteria listed below, which will also be used for the final ranking.

The Hackathon is open to teams composed of researchers or students (undergraduate, graduate, doctoral) from one or more academic/research institutions, business executives, startup founders, or any interested party. An individual cannot participate in more than one team. Selected teams must be physically present at the event venue, JOIST Innovation Park in Larissa.

Each team will have approximately 3 hours to refine their idea, under the guidance of a mentor specializing in their focus area. Upon completion, each team will present their proposal to an Evaluation Committee, composed of academics, representatives of organizations, and businesses. Presentations should be concise, with a maximum presentation time of 5 minutes.

Proposals will be evaluated based on:

  • Team characteristics

  • Proposal maturity

  • Relevance to the challenge

  • Realism of the proposal (overall and component parts, such as objectives, budget, expected results).

Upon completion of the evaluation, the top three proposals will receive the following awards:

  • First Place: Project funding by the Region of Thessaly, up to an amount to be determined through consultation.

  • Second Place: Direct entry into the second phase of the 15th Innovation & Technology Competition of the NBG Business Seeds program by the National Bank of Greece / Cash prize of €1000 from the Cooperative Bank of Thessaly.

  • Third Place: Two free hot desks at the JOIST Innovation Park Coworking Space for 3 months & free membership in the JOIST Community for one year.
