Metabio is not just a health tech startup. It is the result of a long-standing scientific journey led by the company’s CEO, Panagiotis Katsaounis, a molecular geneticist with extensive experience in cancer and neurodegenerative disease research. A visionary and a realist, Mr. Katsaounis identified early on one of the greatest challenges in research and healthcare: the lack of organized, secure, and usable digital infrastructure for the collection and management of biospecimens and clinical data.
The innovative federated platform e-MetabAIo offers a unique solution for managing biospecimens and related data, enhancing the efficiency of biobanking and the R&D lifecycle for drugs and therapies. Recently, the flagship project e-MetabAIo was awarded the “Seal of Excellence” by the European Commission, recognizing it as one of the top proposals within the Horizon Europe EIC Accelerator 2024 framework.
The latest addition to Metabio’s ecosystem, AI-MetaBloQ, is a new DLT Marketplace model for the “trading” of biomedical data and biospecimens, with a focus on ownership, traceability, and citizen participation in the research value chain.
Metabio has not remained within Greece’s geographic borders. With subsidiaries in Bulgaria (Metabio BG EAD) and the United States (Metabio USA), and international collaborations with institutions such as WHO–IARC, Metabio has established itself as the only Greek company actively contributing to the design and implementation of digital solutions for the World Health Organization.
